How to Skin a Bear and Quarter a Big Game Animal Clinic

If you are a new hunter, or are looking for more advice on how to properly skin a bear, and quarter a big game animal, this course is for you! Our dear friends form the Steamboat Springs Colorado Parks and Wildlife office saved a bear carcass that they had to euthanize for us to use for an opportunity just like this. Join us Saturday, July 15th from 10am-2pm in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Exact location of the clinic is still to be determined, but if you are interested in attending this course, please RSVP with the form below, to stay informed on further details! Space is limited and spots will go fast!

Outdoor Edge Knives has graciously offered to donate a knife set to giveaway to one of our lucky participants to use in the backcountry! We will also have special guest, Ashley Gillespe from Go West Taxidermy join us and show us how she likes to see her bear skins and skulls come in for her to dress up for you.

We are so excited for this clinic and can’t wait to share this essential knowledge in becoming a successful hunter.

Women's Hunter Education Course

  • Routt County Rifle Club (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This Course is FULL!

If you would like to be informed on when the next course will be held, please fill out the contact form below, and we will get you on our waiting list!

Obtaining your Hunter Education Certification is the first step to becoming a successful hunter, and is required by law. After a very successful course last year, we have once again partnered up with our friend from Colorado Parks & Wildlife, Kirsten Miller to host a private Hunter Education Course for our Rocky Mountain Sportswomen!

This course will take place at the Routt County Rifle Club in Steamboat Springs, Colorado on Saturday, March 25th 8:00am-5:00pm through Sunday, March 26th 8:00am-3:00pm with a conclusion course at the gun range. Bringing your own gun is NOT required! Colorado Parks and Wildlife will provide a rifle for each participant to use for the conclusion course. There will be a lunch break at 11:20-12:15, but we recommend bringing your own lunch so that we can stay on schedule at the Rifle Club. By completing this course you will receive your official certification and will be able to buy and apply for hunting licenses.

We are hosting this course just before the application deadline for the 2023 Colorado Big Game Draw where you can apply for specific tags to hunt in the fall. Deadline is April 5th.

This course is free to attend, however, for anyone who is not a member of the Routt County Rifle Club, there is a $5 entry fee for use of the facility for the weekend.

This course is open to both ladies and youth. For kids to attend, they must be mature enough to be able to pass the test at the end of the course. There is nothing worse than having a kid fail the course, and having that as their first impression of hunting and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. If you are confident that your child will be able to pass, Kirstin can help assist those who are still learning reading and comprehension by reading the test out loud to them.

Learning alongside other women and from a woman instructor will make this course extra fun, and will help you gain new hunting friends! Our mission at Rocky Mountain Sportswomen is to provide learning opportunities for hunting and fishing more accessible for women, and to help create a community of new friends in the outdoor world. We will also be doing a few giveaways at the end of the course including a couple of subscriptions to ONX Maps, and RMSW merchandise!

This is a private course, meaning it will not be listed on the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website. To register, please fill out the form below, and we will provide you with the official CPW registration link. You may also contact us if you have any questions about this course.

Please note that by filling out this form below, you have NOT completed your registration. You will be sent an email back with the official link to register for the course through Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Rocky Mountain Sportswomen is a non-profit corporation of Colorado. We aim to provide clinics and events for women across the state to broaden our outdoor community. If you would like to make a donation to our efforts donate HERE. Another way to support Rocky Mountain Sportswomen is by shopping in our online store. We appreciate your support!

Virtual Waterfowl Clinic
Dec

Virtual Waterfowl Clinic

With waterfowl season in full swing, we have been putting together a waterfowl clinic for you ladies! The original plan was to do a classroom day in person, a shooting day, and a couple days in the field. However, COVID has recently put Routt County under a “Level Red/Severe Risk” order, and we have decided to do a virtual clinic instead.

We have teamed up with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and Colorado Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. Because waterfowl hunting has many different regulations, season dates, species to hunt, and different hunting tactics, we felt it was important to create this opportunity for people who are interested in waterfowl hunting. The first hour will be hosted by Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers covering the many laws and regulations, hunting access, species identification, and proper shotgun handling. After a quick break, and time for questions, we will pass the torch over to our friends from Colorado BHA to teach us about hunting tactics, calling, and gear.

We are so excited for this event, and hope that now it is virtual, more people will be able to attend, and will be inspired to hit the field for the remainder of the waterfowl season. This event is free, and all are welcome to join! Having your Hunter Education certification is NOT required to attend, for we feel this would be a great opportunity for those who are looking at getting into hunting.

To register, use the link below that will direct you to the official CPW registration system.

We are so excited to announce our SECOND ANNUAL fly fishing trip to Utah with Chunky Trout Outfitters!! Bridget Fabel, a major female influence in the hunting and fishing world, started her own fly fishing guide service in Utah last year. THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO THE COVID-19 SITUATION. We will be sure to re-post a new date within the next couple of weeks, and hope to get you ladies prepared for the upcoming turkey season.

When people think of turkey hunting, a lot of people don’t think about hunting these guys here in Colorado. Along with a wide range of wildlife, both merriam and rio grande turkeys can be found lurking in our woods. With only a few short weeks before spring turkey season, we decided to put together a women’s turkey hunting clinic with Colorado Parks & Wildlife!

If you have always wanted to go turkey hunting, or would just simply like to learn more about the subject, join us at the Colorado Parks & Wildlife office in Steamboat Springs on Tuesday, March 24th from 6pm-9pm alongside other women, including CPW’s Education and Hunter Outreach Coordinator, Kathleen Tadvick. Turkey hunting season runs from April 11th through May 31st. We want to make sure you are properly prepared for the season, and provide you with the best tips, tricks, and tactics on how to bag these big, beautiful gobblers. We will also go over rules and regulations to hunting turkeys in Colorado, as well as unit and tag opportunities.

By attending this clinic, you will receive first priority to sign up and attend our ladies weekend turkey hunt in May! More details will be announced on the night of the clinic before we open it up to the rest of the public. We will also be doing a few giveaways to promote enthusiasm for turkey hunting and being a part of Rocky Mountain Sportswomen.

In order to attend this clinic, you must RSVP below, and have purchased your annual habitat stamp, to show your support for CPW’s efforts. Anyone between the ages of 18 an 64 must buy a stamp in order to buy or apply for a hunting or fishing license. Habitat stamps only cost $10 annually, and help fund the Colorado Wildlife Habitat Program (CWHP). For more information on the Habitat Stamp, or if you still need to purchase one, visit the Colorado Parks & Wildlife website. You may also purchase one at checkout when you buy your annual fishing license, or turkey tag!

Please RSVP below, and we look forward to talking turkey with you!

Ladies on Ice at Pearl Lake State Park

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO THE COVID-19 SITUATION.

Missed us at Steamboat Lake?? No worries! Join us for a fun-filled day at Pearl Lake State Park hitting the hard water with your fellow Rocky Mountain Sportswomen. Pearl Lake is located about 45 minutes north of Steamboat Springs near Clark, Colorado. A parks pass is required in order to park at the lake. With that being said, we can arrange to meet at the Walmart parking lot in Steamboat to carpool! We will meet in the parking lot closer to Anytime Fitness at 7:30am in hopes to be on the lake by 9:00 am.

You MUST have a fishing license to participate! You can purchase your license online at the Colorado Parks & Wildlife website, or at the State Parks office. The annual fishing licenses for 2020 go on sale on March 1st, so this is a great time to purchase your license for the rest of the year. Be sure to dress appropriately for cold, snowy weather, and bring any snacks, water, and ice fishing gear you may have. If you have never been ice fishing before, that’s okay! We will guide you along the way, and show you how fun it can be. The State Park will provide us with extra rods and augers for us as well. This event is free, however, we always accept monetary donations to cover any costs for bait and tackle, and for future Rocky Mountain Sportswomen events!

Please RSVP below so that we may know how many people to expect, and plan accordingly. Let us know if you have any questions, and we look forward to fishing with you!
